Essential Oil Spotlight Tuesday: Terrashield

This week we are spotlighting one of our more popular oils blends for spring and summer, TerraShield!

TerraShield is my family’s favorite blend for the summer. We spend a lot of time outside and this is the magic that wards off any insects that want to join our summer festivities. This oil is safe for everyone in your family and can even help your garden flourish by giving it a protective barrier. TerraShield has recently been updated to include Tamanu oil which not only provided extra benefits for your use but is positively impacting families in Madagascar through dōTERRA’s Cō-Impact Sourcing. This blend can be diffused or applied topically using the TerraShield Spray to provide a defense against the annoyances of outdoor activities.

Why Terrashield Works

This is the part that is fascinating. Many plants essential oils protect themselves from potential threats in their environment. It’s kind of like a vapor shield. In this blend, the plants with a natural repellent are Cedarwood, Arborvitae and catnip.

I have 6 kids, so I’m envisioning plants with a super power. A force field or shield that causes things that threaten the plant to bounce off or want to leave. So, when we put it on, we imagine that we’re activating our forcefield and nothing can get through.

Terrashield features Cedarwood, Ylang Ylang, Catnip, Lemon Eucalyptus, Litsea, Nootka, Arborvitae, and Vanilla Bean Absolute. Many people tell me they love it because it smells great. As a result, they’re more likely to put it on. More importantly, they’re protected.

A few summers ago, my mom was one of the leaders for the summer camp for teenage girls put on by our church. That year, the bugs were everywhere. She heard lots of complaints about the bites they were getting even while using the bug repellant they brought. She was equipped with Terrashield. She was protected and comfortable throughout the time she was at camp. You may be wondering why she didn’t share with others since they were getting bit and she wasn’t. She offered to share her Terrashield . They refused and kept applying what the same product they had, even though they could see Terrashield was working for her and theirs wasn’t.

I’ve heard many similar stories.

Where are some great places to apply Terrashield?

Terrashield is natural and safe to use with the entire family. You’ll still want to avoid applying to sensitive areas including the eyes, inside the nose and ears, etc.

  • Apply TerraShield to the legs, arms, and neck before going outdoors or diffuse on your patio.
  • Take TerraShield on camping trips or to outdoor events.
  • Spray TerraShield around your door, window seals, and tent.
  • Place a drop on your Aromatherapy jewelry
  • Add 3-4 drops to an ultrasonic diffuser and diffuse during your next barbecue

While it is rare, it’s possible to experience skin sensitivity. If this happens, apply plant based oil such as fractionated coconut oil, olive oil, grapeseed oil, etc to further dilute.

Tell me more!

Terrashield comes in a 15 ml bottle or a 30 ml spray bottle. The 15 ml bottle comes in handy when using in a diffuser or if you choose to dilute it. The 30 ml is perfect for use in the great outdoors. The spray allows for easy application when out and about.

Which would you choose? The 15 ml bottle or the 30 ml spray bottle?

There is another option if you want the best of both worlds. You can get an empty bottle with a spray top and pour some in some TerraShield or there are lids that you can attach to your 15 ml bottle.

  • My whole life I have had a struggle in the spring and summer months and I know I am not the only one that experiences these issues. When I was a kid, I had to get help to manage the symptoms that would make me so miserable while trees were blooming and especially when I was around freshly cut grass. Five years ago, my wife and I were invited to attend a dōTERRA essential oils class taught by my sister-in-law. I agreed to go, but was quite skeptical and did not think the oils would help me at all. During the class, my sister-in-law asked if anyone was struggling with the changing of the seasons. Since that was something I had trouble with, I raised my hand and she asked me to try the oils. Still skeptical, I held out my hand as she dropped lavender, lemon, and peppermint onto it. I rubbed my hands together, cupped them over my face, and breathed in. While I was not instantly convinced, I could feel a difference. Something was happening with my eyes and my nose and I felt great. Ever since that day, I have kept sample vials of those three oils with me at all times. There are still weeks in the summertime that I need extra support. One of my favorite times to use this combination aromatically is right before I mow the lawn to keep me protected against the effects grass can have on my immune system. I also enjoy using these oils for their additional benefits: lavender makes me happy, peppermint helps me feel energized, and lemon keeps me clear and aware.

  • I was working outside one day and I noticed that the cracks in my driveway had been overtaken by ants. There were thousands of them! In my rush to resolve this problem in the quickest possible manner, I decided fire was my best option.  A few hours later I returned to inspect the ant colony only to find they were still there. Honestly, I was frustrated but also impressed.  Maybe we could learn to co-exist.  I would control the boundaries from the basketball hoop to the eastern gate, and the ants would control the western boundaries ending at the sidewalk.  As I searched for paper and pen to draft new property boundaries I stumbled across a bottle of Peppermint. I recalled my essential oil training and how Peppermint can be used as a safe and effective bug repellent.  I liberally dropped the oil in the cracks and all around where the ants were to see if that would do anything.  When I came back to it later, the ants were gone.

You mentioned TerraShield helps the garden flourish. What is the best way to use it there?

      Hi Carol,

Thank you for your question. There is a you can use to learn some techniques other oil enthusiasts use in their gardens. They talk about how much they use and where. The same concepts apply with Terrashield: Spray the plants and the ground around them. People often dilute other oils before applying. You can dilute Terrashield. Keep in mind that it is already in a base of Fractionated Coconut Oil, therefore it is already diluted for human use. You may want to dilute further to make your Terrashield last longer. If you’re still experiencing problems caused by pests, decrease how much you dilute it, and reapply. I also recommend reapplying after it rains.

Last week, I offered more specific tips for using essential oils in the garden. Here are some additional resources: Gardener’s Journal and Gardening with Essential Oils Presentation.

Hope that helps! If not, please contact me again. I look forward to serving you.
